From hair thinning, to your hair changing texture or become dry and brittle, women will experience some challenges and concerns with their hair during or after the menopause. During menopause daily task such as washing or brushing your hair can be extremely upsetting & stressful, as around 40% of woman will experience hair loss during this time. This can be distressing as your hair plays such an important aspect of self-identity.

Why does hair thin during the menopause?

With the declining hormone levels, hair growth can gradually slow down, resulting in thinner locks. This reduction in estrogen and progesterone levels triggers the presence of male hormones known as androgens. These hormones stimulate the shrinking of hair follicles on the scalp, contributing to hair loss and increased hair shedding. However, hair loss is not the only outcome, an increased level of testosterone can affect your hair follicles – changing your hair's thickness, length or hairline. In some cases, people develop androgenetic alopecia which is more commonly referred to as “female-pattern baldness” around the parting line or crown of your head. During menopause, another crucial factor that contributes to hair thinning is the shortened growth phase within the hair growth cycle. Known as the anagen phase, this is when your hair is actively growing and you are creating new hair follicles. Menopause essentially reduces the duration of the active hair growth phase, leading to your hair being temporarily thinner.
