Summer is the perfect time to chill and relax your look, and that includes experimenting with natural summer hairstyles. As the weather warms up, chances are you want to try out some styles that are easy to do and keep your hair away from your face.

If you’re spending more time outdoors, hitting the beach or going on holiday then some new hairstyles for summer can totally change up your look.

Why is summer the best time to experiment with your hair?

In summer, the weather can feel more hot and humid so chances are you want to keep your hair up and away from your face and neck. This can help you to feel cooler, reduce how much you sweat and stop your hair from frizzing out or feeling limp and dull - especially if you’re getting more active in the warmer weather. It’s also the perfect time to try out protective leave-in products like Show:Off Leave-In Conditioner.

As long as you use the right styling products, natural hairstyles can withstand the heat and activities of summer easily. Whether it’s braids, a high pony, a bun or a half up half down style, it’s easy to adapt your summer hairstyles. Plus, they’re easy to take down and wash your hair at the end of the day, which is essential if you’ve been at the beach, in the pool or out in the heat.

It’s the ideal time to try lower-maintenance hairstyles. Constantly touching or playing with your hair can contribute to breakage and damage, especially if it’s already heat-damaged, dry or brittle, so keeping your hair out of your face is always a great idea when possible.

With longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures, washing and drying your hair can be more convenient and less damaging in the summer months. Plus, regular washing helps to remove sweat and product build-up, keeping the scalp healthy and the hair fresh.

Trending summer hair you need to try

Let’s talk about two trending styles that you need to know about this summer, so you can add some new summer hairstyles to your routine.

Texture

Adding some texture into your hair is about embracing the natural texture that you already have from that slight wave or bend, to tight curls and coils, or creating some texture and depth with styling tools if your hair is naturally straight.

Shu-Lan Cheung, FFØR Technical Educator says:

“Everyone loves a bit of texture in summer, whether it’s natural beachy waves or a ponytail with a bit more curl and bounce. Relaxing your style in summer is so important for your hair, and it can be adapted for everyone, whatever your natural hair texture or length. It’s also great for day 2 hair that isn’t freshly washed.”

No matter what your texture goals, start out with clean or freshly washed hair. Using a volumising shampoo and conditioner like the Re:Vamp Volumising Duo can help get a little more body and lift into your hair before you start.

If your hair is wet or you have fine, thin hair that needs a bit of oomph before you go for the textured look, use our Full:Flex Thickening Foam. It’s a lightweight thickening foam that’s designed to give long-lasting volume and lift to fine, thin hair without stickiness. You can use it to scrunch and tousle some texture into your hair, encouraging natural waves and texture to form.

For extra textured looks and beachy waves, use True:Grit on dry or damp hair and scrunch with your hands. This gorgeous sea salt spray separates and texturises the hair to create the perfect beachy, natural waves with amazing texture. It also has a medium hold and matte finish so won’t leave your hair looking crunchy or too shiny and stuck in place. You can add some extra movement and texture with your straighteners or tongs too.

If you have naturally wavy, curly or coily hair, then using a moisturising curl cream like Pre:Curl Creme couldn’t be easier. Apply to we hair and use your fingers to form and manipulate your waves and curls to get the texture you’re looking for and simply let it dry naturally. Finish with a spritz of a shine spray like Super:Shine Gloss Mist.

The Messy Bun

Everyone loves a messy bun. It's chic and practical whilst being super quick to do and keeping hair out of your face. It can even help protect your hair, reducing friction and minimising breakage compared to tight ponytails

But there’s a difference between a messy bun and the type of bun you throw your hair into before you hit the pool. Here’s how to get the intentionally messy bun look.

All:In Oil

To create a messy bun, start by gathering your hair into a higher low ponytail and securing it with a hair tie. Then, loosely twist the ponytail around the base to form a bun, allowing some strands to fall out for a relaxed, undone look. You can also just gather the hair in the bun rather than twisting it, and folding it over on itself.

Secure the bun with another hair tie or bobby pins as needed, but keep it loose to maintain the messy vibe. For added texture and volume, gently tease the hair at the crown before gathering it into the ponytail. Using a hair oil like All:In Oil or a styling clay like On:Point can help you to get some texture, hold and shine into your hair without it looking too styled.

Finally, pull out a few face-framing strands and tug on the bun to loosen it further, creating a casual and effortless hairstyle perfect for any occasion. Mist your hair with some Full:Proof Finish Hairspray to keep your messy bun in place without it looking slicked back.

Shu-Lan added:

“A messy bun works for every hair type and it’s so low maintenance, and it doesn’t need you to use any extra heat on your hair. In summer, it’s a gorgeous look that can take you from day to night. You can emphasise your fringe or the front of your hair by adding a soft wave, or get creative with half up/half down styles for a change.”
